Flete House News
What's going on around Flete House
Flete House is part of an estate that can be traced back to Saxon times. The house itself dates back to the 16th century, although architect Norman Shaw remodelled much of it at the end of the 1800s.
Modbury is the nearest sizeable village, also nearby is Ermington, notable for the crooked spire of its 14th-century church, with the town of Ivybridge just a further couple of miles to the north and the city of Plymouth an 11-mile drive to the west. The River Erme runs from Dartmoor down to the English Channel; today it provides scenic riverside walks, although historically it's been responsible for powering the industrial growth in the area. Much of that history remains visible, with many Georgian and Victorian buildings still standing in Ivybridge.
For the practical side of life, Modbury is only two miles away, where you can find a post office, a village store and a butcher offering the finest local meats. If you're looking for a relaxing pint or hearty fare, you'll also find a couple of pubs extending a warm welcome. Although the town celebrates its history, it's also way ahead in the eco-friendly stakes, being the first town in the UK to ban the use of plastic bags in all of its shops.
You'll also find plenty of shops in Ivybridge and at the town's Glanvilles Mill shopping precinct - or you could head to Plymouth, where maritime heritage has been blended with contemporary culture. You'll discover narrow Elizabethan streets where Sir Francis Drake would have walked... and a pedestrianised centre with a wealth of big high-street names, restaurants and cafes.
